MANILA, Philippines – With a week to go before the Senate grills the PNP’s top officials, Senator Leila de Lima sent an open letter to President Rodrigo Duterte urging him to monitor the sessions closely.
In the letter, a copy of which can be seen on her official Facebook page, De Lima said the Senate only wants to confirm reports of scalawags within the government who are using the president’s anti-drug campaign as cover to kill off their rivals or whistleblowers in the illegal drug trade. She said such unscrupulous individuals were subverting Duterte’s good intentions.
“May mga indikasyon o teorya po na nagsasabing hindi lahat ng nangyayaring pagpatay ay talagang kaugnay, kundi kasabay lamang, ng kampanya laban sa droga. May mga pagpatay na isinasabay o isinasakay lamang ng mga tiwaling kawani ng pamahalaan at mga kasabwat nila upang pagtakpan ang kanilang karumal-dumal na partisipasyon sa kalakalan ng droga. Hindi nila isinusulong, kundi inililihis pa nga ang direksyon ng paglaban sa droga at sinasabotahe ang magagandang layunin ng kampanya,” she said.

De Lima added that by uncovering the truth, they will be able to strengthen the president’s anti-drug campaign and protect the rights of innocent civilians at the same time.
“Sa paglalahad ng katotohanan, pakay po natin ang tunay na tagumpay ng kampanya laban sa droga at kriminalidad sa pagpapanukala ng mga nararapat na batas at alituntunin upang tulungan ang ating mga alagad ng batas sa tamang pagtupad ng tungkulin. Higit sa lahat, hangad po natin gaya rin ng hangad ninyo, Pangulong Duterte, na palakasin pa ang sistema ng ating mga batas para matiyak ang pag-iral ng batas at paggalang sa karapatang pantao sa lahat ng pagkakataon,” she said.
