- First meeting for Miss Universe tackled solving Metro Manila traffic and ensuring public safety
- The meeting was held by the multi-agency Philippine Host Committee
- The Miss Universe pageant will be held in the Philippines on January 30, 2017
The multi-agency Philippine Host Committee (PHC) held its first meeting to plan and prepare for the staging of the Miss Universe pageant in the country; tackling the solving of Metro Manila’s traffic gridlock and ensuring public safety surfaced as the main concern.
“The maddening traffic mess is obviously the one single problem that beset our daily economic activities in Metro Manila, and we will find ways so as not to aggravate this with the hosting of Miss Universe,” Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Wanda Teo stated.
It was disclosed that the pageant events will be held outside Metro Manila — at tourist destinations like Palawan, Cebu, Batangas and Isabela Province — to avoid creating inconvenience to the general public. World-class attractions in Davao City, Vigan, and Cagayan de Oro are also slated as possible venues of the pageant’s pre-coronation segments.
Other issues
Aside from traffic and public safety, the hosting panel also discussed the other issues that were raised during the PHC meeting.
The other issues include facilitating the arrival and admission of Miss Universe participants from over 90 countries, the security at the various pageant venues, and the coordination with partners in the private sector.
The PHC
The Miss Universe PHC includes 12 agencies which are tasked to map out the master plan for holding the event.
The PHC members are the Office of the Executive Secretary; the departments of Public Works and Highways; Foreign Affairs; Trade and Industry; Information and Communications Technology; Interior and Local Government; Transportation; Health; Bureau of Immigration of the Department of Justice; Bureau of Customs and Bureau of Internal Revenue of the Department of Finance; Philippine National Police; and the Manila International Airport Authority.
