With the boom of various technological gadgets and social media websites that allow interaction electronically, it would seem that the traditional way of letter writing is fast becoming a thing of the past — something that the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) just can’t allow to happen. Hence, in response to the diminishing passion over letter writing, it recently launched a nationwide writing competition which aims to bring back the passion of letter writing among students.
The contest, which was made possible by PHLPost in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (KWF), is dubbed as “Salamat Po” [Thank You] nationwide letter writing contest.
The Assistant Postmaster General for Marketing Luis Carlos said as posted on the PHLPost website: “Basically, we (PHLPost) feel that the theme “Salamat Po” (Thank you) is appropriate in today’s generation especially among the Filipino youth to inculcate the virtue of gratitude through the art of letter writing. It’s an experience that modern technology cannot touch”.
The competition can be participated in by students in the elementary and high school level whether public or private institution. Participants can use either English or Filipino as medium of expression and must use the proper format of writing a letter – to include place and date, addressee’s signature, opening and closing salutation.
Students are urged to send a one- or two pages of handwritten “Thank You” letter to anyone they want via postal mail for a chance to win PHP50,000.
Moreover, the letter should include the name of the school and the teacher and mailed to addressee via the post office and accredited postal stations for delivery anywhere in the Philippines with postage rate of P12.00.
Students may also send letters/postcards/aerogramme abroad using Airmail services; published rates applied as posted on PHLPost website.
The grand draw winner, which will be announced on April 2017, will receive P50,000. The same amount will also be given to the school and teacher of the child.
A semi-grand draw will also be held on March 15, 2017, wherein the winning student, his/her teacher and the school will be given P10,000.00 each.
The competition is already on its fourth year and is aiming to reach a wider cluster of public and private schools in order to effectively promote and develop young students’ skills in composition.
PHLPost encourage schools to include letter writing activities in their events and programs as part of the celebration of the Buwan ng Wika and National Teacher’s month this year.
