Senator Tito Sotto was under fire for publicly shaming a sexually assaulted woman and implying that it was the woman’s fault.
During the July 9 episode of the noontime show ‘Eat Bulaga’, in its ‘Juan For All, All For Juan’ segment, a female contestant shared how her drinking buddies took advantage of her in the past and sexually assaulted her while intoxicated. To which, Sotto reacted and berated her for putting herself in a vulnerable position.
As seen in a video clip shared by Miss Krizzy on Twitter, Sotto told the woman she shouldn’t have been drinking in the first place.
“Kasalanan ng lahat ng iyan, ‘yung pag-inom. ‘Yung pa-shot shot. Kababae mong tao, pa shot-shot ka,” he told the woman.
[The problem there is the drinking. Taking shots. You’re a woman, you shouldn’t be drinking liquor.]
Viewers of the show took to social media to express their disdain over Sotto’s remark, while some defended the senator.
After being condemned online, the senator decided to break his silence regarding the controversy.
“Watch the episode. Some netizens who commented did not even watch it,” he told Rappler in a text message.
“It was a simple reaction saying that a married lady should not be out at night having shots or drinking with men other than her husband. Talagang mapapagbintangan ka [You will really be blamed],” he continued.
“That’s the context. What’s wrong with that?” he added.
The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) have ordered Eat Bulaga executives to appear before the board, which is scheduled on July 21, after receiving complaints regarding Sotto’s controversial and seemingly sexist remark,
