MANILA, Philippines – It was a line he was apparently waiting for.
On his Twitter account, Senator Bongbong Marcos quoted President Rodrigo Duterte’s memorable State of the Nation Address (SONA) sound bite about not finger-pointing and moving on.
“We cannot move forward if we allow the past to pull us back. Finger pointing is not the way,” read Marcos’ tweet which was liked by his supporters.
However, critics accused the senator of twisting Duterte’s words to make it seem like the president was condoning his late father Ferdinand Marcos’s regime and the abuses associated with it.
They flooded his account with Martial Law mementos and accounts of victims like Archimedes Trajano and Luis “Boyet” Trajano and said his family’s decades-long rule shouldn’t be so easily forgotten.
“Lest I Be Misunderstood”
During his SONA, Duterte mentioned he won’t be blaming his predecessors and would instead focus on moving the country forward.
“We cannot move forward if we allow the past to pull us back. Finger-pointing is not the way,” he said. “This is why I will not waste precious time on dwelling on the sins of the past or blaming those who are perceived to be responsible of the mess that we are in and suffering from.”
At the same time, Duterte clarified those who have wronged the country won’t go unpunished.
“Lest I be misunderstood, let me say clearly that those who betray the people’s trust shall not go unpunished and they will have their day in court,” he said.
