MANILA, Philippines – There will be no finger pointing in this SONA.
In an interview with ABS-CBN, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Martin Andanar said President Rodrigo Duterte would rather focus on discussing his 10-point economic agenda in his first State of the Nationa Address on Monday, July 25 rather than highlighting the perceived failures of past administrations.
“Ito ay magiging plano ng Pangulo, roadmap niya para sa susunod na anim na taon. Iyung mga legislative agenda na kanyang ilalatag para maintindihan ng taumbayan kung ano iyung kanyang mga prayoridad,” he said.
[This SONA will be the President’s way of showing his roadmap for the coming six years. He will discuss his legislative so that our countrymen will know what are his priorities.]
Andanar added that the president wishes for the SONA to be simple and as convenient to the public as possible. This means no flamboyant dresses and a lesser number of troops out in the streets.
“It’s really about being sensitive to our kababayans, our fellow Filipinos. Alam naman nating iyung mga dadalo doon, may mga kaya naman iyang mga ‘yan [We know those who’ll go there are wealthy and have the means], pero let’s not flaunt it,” he said.
Joint Task Force NCR acting commander Col. Vic Tomas said they had already been informed by Duterte to deploy a fewer number of troops for security to avoid causing traffic jams around the Batasang Pambansa Complex.
Militants, a common sight in every SONA, have also expressed their intent to rally during Duterte’s SONA — this time as a show of support rather than protest.
