- Police reported a substantial decrease in crime
- From 52,950 in January, incidents of crime have slipped to 46,060 nationwide
- War on drugs credited with the decreasing number of crimes
MANILA, Philippines – Amid the ongoing campaign against illegal drugs, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported a decreasing crime rate since the start of the year.
From 52,950 reported incidents of crime in January, the PNP recorded only 46,060 in June.
In a press release on the PNP website, Chief Supt. Camilo Pancratius Cascolan— Director of the Directorate for Operations— attributed the decrease to the PNP’s intense anti-drug drive, namely operations “Project Double Barrel” and “Tokhang.”
Cascolan also expressed optimism the pattern would continue as the PNP continues its campaign.
According to its data, the police have so far netted 3,213 drug personalities under Project Double Barrel while another 112,902 dependents and 7,107 have turned themselves in.
239 drug suspects were also killed in police operations as of July 22.
Earlier, PNP chief Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa said the country’s criminals are now panicking because they are being actively targeted.
“Nagpa-panic na sila, alam nila there’s no stopping us. Alam nila si Presidente hindi hihinto hangga’t hindi sila nakukuha,” he said.
[They are panicking, they know there’s no stopping us. They know the President won’t stop until they’re all caught.]
While admitting that homicide and murder rates have gone up, Dela Rosa said those killed have been criminals and not innocent civilians.
“Isang analysis diyan, puwedeng ‘yung mga nangamatay ‘yan ‘yung mga tulisan, magnanakaw or rapist. Kung hindi sila, ‘yung ibang hindi namamatay baka takot na gumawa dahil alam nila mamamatay sila,” he said.
[One analysis is that those who died are the thugs, thieves or rapists. If not them, then those who might otherwise kill are afraid to do it now because they know they will also be killed.]
