MANILA, Philippines – A video showing the hardships and obstacles commuters are facing while taking a ride via the Philippine National Railways (PNR) during rush hour goes online and created a stir in the online community.
In the video posted by Francis Charles Brines on his Facebook account, PNR passengers are forced to squeeze themselves inside a train amid a heavy downpour on Thursday night. Brines’ video has now been viewed more than 786,000 times.
“Eto ang mapapala ng pamasahe mong P10 piso [This is what you get for a P10 fare],” said Brines in the video caption..
Brines, together with a friend, were testing different routes going home as they normally see that buses traveling to EDSA are always full during rush hours.
“Lagi kasi tayuan ang mga bus sa EDSA [Travel by bus along EDSA is always full]. And we wanted to try PNR,” Brines said as quoted in an article by ABS-CBN News.
However, Brines said he soon regretted his decision as upon arriving at the station by 6:45 p.m., he saw all trains were jam-packed.
“Napakamura ng pamasahe, P10, kaya parang buong Pilipinas ang nasa Buendia Station [Fare is so cheap, P10, so it’s as if the entire Philippines is at Buendia Station],” he said.
To make matters worse, heavy rains fell as people were trying to squeeze themselves in.
An article by GMA News said that PNR serves about 130,000 passengers every day using their six trains, which has a total capacity of only 40,000.
This overcrowding is the main reason why Metro Manila commuters have often complained of hellish commutes; with congested roads and inconvenient public transport systems.
Joseph Alan Dilay, the general manager of PNR, said the problem arises due to lack of funds to repair the facilities and trains. However, Dilay assured the public that they are starting to improve their services and have created new and bigger waiting area.
