Amidst the negative feedback over President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision to appoint several showbiz personalities in government positions, the Malacañang stands by the chief executive’s prerogative in choosing the people he wants to join his administration.
Critics and supporters alike were in an uproar when news of President Duterte’s appointees hit the headlines.
Communications Secretary Martin Andanar appealed to the public to respect the President’s prerogative in choosing his team to govern the country.
“If the President wishes to appoint anyone that he deems credible, then we leave the wisdom behind those appointments to the President,” Andanar said in an article published by Inquirer.
“I am sure many of us Filipinos understand what we call presidential prerogative,” he added.
Duterte’s latest appointees drew flak for their lack of experience and qualifications in the respected positions given to them and some claim that these personalities were only given positions as a reward for their support during Duterte’s campaign.
Among Duterte’s pick were: Singer Jimmy Bondoc and comedian Arnel Ignacio, both were appointed to the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), former ABS-CBN reporter Kat de Castro was named tourism undersecretary, musician Ramon “RJ” Jacinto was appointed the presidential adviser on economic affairs and information technology communications, as per an article published by Philstar.
There have also been talks of the possible appointment of the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) chief position to Freddie Aguilar — who composed the campaign jingle “Duterte para sa Tunay na Pagbabago,” and happens to be Duterte’s favorite singer.
“The supposed appointment or appointments are merely rumors until the appointments are signed. So far I have yet to see the signed appointments of those who have been heavily criticized by the public,” Andanar said.
