MANILA, Philippines – Davao City it is.
According to sports columnist Recah Trinidad, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chief William “Butch” Ramirez confirmed that President Rodrigo Duterte has given the go-signal for Davao City to host the 2019 edition of the Southeast Asian Games.
Ramirez said that Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose Cojuangco Jr. and a team of Filipino officials have already submitted a letter of acceptance to host the Games.
He added he is also confident of Duterte doing everything to make sure the event comes out a success.
“This is the first time an international sports event of this magnitude will be held in Davao , and I’m sure the President will do everything to ensure its success,” he said; adding that several corporate sponsors have also pledged to help out.
Earlier, Ramirez said either Manila or Davao City would host the Games.
“The global situation is very fragile,” he said; in referencing also Mindanao’s peace and order situation, “So you always think of Manila as the possible host.”
“We will also prepare Manila, (and) another option,” he added. “The Philippines really has maybe two options.”
The last time the Philippines hosted the SEA Games was in 2005. In that edition, it garnered first place in the overall medal tally with 291 medals—113 golds, 84, silvers, and 94 bronzes.
Brunei Darussalam was originally tapped to host the 2019 SEA Games. However, the deal did not push through.
Malaysia will be hosting the 2017 SEA Games.
