MANCHESTER, England – A manipulative son scammed his own father by asking money; saying he was dying from cancer but intended to use the money to fly to America to see his online girlfriend.
Richard Moriarty mentioned in his article for The Sun that 33-year-old Darren Altham told his family he was ‘diagnosed’ with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and needs to undergo a crucial treatment as he was terminally ill.
Altham told his dad Trevor that he is desperate to visit a girl in the US, which he met online playing video games, at least before he dies. Trevor, out of sympathy for his son, gave the needed money for the trip.
However, before Altham boarded the plane taking him to the US, his father and step-mother noticed that a further £600 had also vanished from their joint account. The son also stole Trevor’s debit card which he used to book his flight to the US, and also pocketing the £2,000 cash his dad gave him.
An article by Todd Fitzgerald for Manchester Evening News said that Altham was arrested at Manchester Airport when he returned from America after his family contacted the cops.
Altham pleaded not guilty to fraud by false representation at the beginning of his trial at Rochdale Magistrates’ Court; however, he changed his plea half-way through the proceedings.
Altham revealed in the court that his plot began when he discovered a lump on his arm. He claimed he has cancer while he was still awaiting test results and there was no suggestion as yet that he was ill.
Trevor shared to the court that he felt “sad” when his son told him about his cancer and that as a father, he didn’t want him to “miss the opportunity” to travel to America. The father said that the loan put him under “financial pressure” and insisted he wouldn’t have given his son the cash if he hadn’t believed he was ill.
“This is so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified, because of the significant breach of trust,” said the chairman of the bench Barbara Kayol.
“You are incredibly lucky your father is prepared to have you back home and support you after what you have done,” she added.
Meanwhile, defense counsel David Hewitt said his client Altham had “over-egged the pudding” after finding a lump under his arm.
