Weeks before the 17th Congress opens, President Rodrigo Duterte reiterated to some lawmakers his priority for re-instituting the imposition of death penalty to criminals.
The President met with several members of the Senate and the House of Representatives on late Saturday evening in Davao City where he stood by his decision to make death penalty a priority measure.
“He [said] so many officials are involved. It’s like treason to him because they should be the ones who protect the people [from illegal drugs] yet they are the cause of its rampant spread in the country,” The Standard quoted Senator Edgardo Angara who was one of the lawmakers who paid Duterte a courtesy visit.
“We are open to that [restoring death penalty],” Angara said as he promised to “listen to arguments.”
According to the article by The Standard, the solons pledged their support to the measures Duterte will issue to Congress.
Among those present at the late night meeting in Duterte’s favorite spot After Dark Resto Bar were Angara, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, Representatives Sherwin Tugna, Lord Allan Jay Velasco, Franz Josef Alvarez and Scott Davies Lanete.
Last week, presumptive House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez has filed a bill aiming to bring back death penalty. He also filed a bill that seeks to lower the age of juvenile delinquents who can be arrested from 12 years old to 9 years old.
In the upper house, Senator Manny Pacquiao – also among Duterte’s allies – filed a similar bill.
Duterte earlier said that he wants to execute criminals by public hanging rather than through lethal injection.
