China said it will cooperate with the Philippines in its campaign against the illicit drug trade.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 19, the Chinese Embassy in Manila expressed China’s willingness for effective cooperation with the Durterte administration in its efforts to address the proliferation and trafficking of illegal drugs.
“China has expressed explicitly to the new administration China’s willingness for effective cooperation in this regard, and would like to work out a specific plan of action with the Philippine side,” Chinese Embassy in Manila spokesman Lingxiao Li said in a statement.
Li made the statement a day after President Rodrigo Duterte expressed his dismay over the fact that many Chinese nationals are involved in the manufacture and sale of illegal drugs in the country. Duterte said he would one day confront China about it.
“When I come face to face with them, I will tell them all that is bothering me,” The Standard quoted Duterte as saying.
The Chinese embassy spokesman said China recognizes the Duterte administration’s firm stance against the proliferation of illegal drugs in the Philippines.
“China fully understands that the Philippine government under the leadership of H.E. President Rodrigo Duterte has taken it as a top priority in cracking down drug-related crimes,” reads Li’s statement.
“The Chinese government has been firm and severe in drug control and in punishing all drug criminals in accordance with laws regardless of their nationalities,” the embassy said.
“China has also promoted and carried out effective international cooperation with many countries. Illicit drugs are common enemy of the mankind. Fighting against all drug-related crimes is shared responsibility of all countries in the world,” it added.
