Ever experienced going into the mall and there’s this saleslady who wouldn’t entertain you enthusiastically just because you don’t look someone who would buy expensive items?
This King or Maharaja from India did. Back in the year 1920, Jai Singh, Maharaja of Alwar in Rajasthan, strolled in the London streets. While doing so, he went across the showroom of once infamous car luxury brand, Rolls Royce. He went in to inquire the costs of the models and the specifications of the model.
Unfortunately, the British salesman treated him like an Indian poor guy after one good look up him. He was then drove out of the showroom.
So when the Maharaja returned to the hotel, he instructed his servants to call that showroom and them he would like to purchase Roll Royce cars. He went to the same showroom but this time, in his kingly attire. The showroom prepared a red carpet for him and the salesmen including the discriminating one who drove him away, lined up to honor him. He then purchased six Rolls Royce cars in cash and shipped them to India. He had an idea.
When the vehicles reached India, he ordered the municipality to use the luxury cars in transporting garbage and collecting them around the city. This was the worst insult a brand can ever have and quickly went viral. This affected the sales of Rolls Royce as people got embarrassed of the idea of collecting garbage now attached to the luxury car. Their sales dropped immensely all around the world.
The Maharaja then received apology from the London showroom and offered him 6 more cars for free. He accepted it and ordered the municipality to stop using the luxury cars.
