Neophyte congresswoman Lipa City Representative Vilma Santos expressed support for a bill which proposes to impose a “no work, no pay” policy for lawmakers who fail to attend sessions in Congress.
Santos, who is in her first term as a legislator after serving three terms as governor of Batangas, believes that lawmakers should really work for their salaries.
“I don’t think I’m against it. Siguro tama lang ‘yun. Kung hindi ka magtatrabaho, ba’t ka babayaran? Kapag tinrabaho mo, dapat kang bayaran. [I think it’s just right. If you don’t work, why should you be paid? If you worked for it, you should be paid.] I don’t think major problema ‘yan. Sa tingin ko tama lang naman ‘yung pagsasabatas niyan. [In my view, it is right to put it in law],” she told the Inquirer.
House Bill 412, filed by Navotas City Representative Toby Tiangco, seeks to impose salary deductions for members of Congress who do not show up in regular and special sessions.
The measure aims to reduce the perennial problem of absenteeism among congressmen.
For her part, Santos promises to fulfill her duties by attending sessions in Congress. She adds that not only her constituents, but also the entire country would benefit from her service in the legislature.
“Hindi lang constituents ang makikinabang kundi buong Pilipinas. [Not only constituents but the whole Philippines would benefit.] So you have to be very careful at kung ano man yung bill na susuportahan mo, kailangan pag-aralan mong mabuti ‘yung mga proseso [and whatever bill you support, you have to study well the processes],” she explained.
