Vice President Leni Robredo, who was recently appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte as the new Chairperson of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC), promised to focus on the 1.4 million housing backlog by the government.
These are mainly for victims of calamities, homeless families, and those living in houses deemed no longer safe fit for residence.
“Ang kailangan kong aralin ay ano ba ang status nito? May nagawa na ba? Naumpisahan na ba? May on-going ba? Pero tingin ko ang pinaka-target at the end of six years, kung nandoon pa ako at the end of six years, at least ma-satisfy ‘yung backlog. [What I need to study is what is the status of these? Has there been anything done? Was there anything begun? Are there on-going projects? But I think our main target at the end of the six years, if I am still there at the end of the six years, at least the backlog would be satisfied],” she explained to GMA News.
Robredo takes over the reins as the country’s housing czar, after her immediate predecessors, the former Vice Presidents Jejomar Binay and Noli de Castro, who both held the same Cabinet post.
According to her, the HUDCC currently projects there is still a need to provide 5.5 million additional housing.
The Vice President has already met with HUDCC officials for an initial briefing regarding the current status of the Council and its attached agencies.
In addition to fixing the backlog, Robredo also says she plans to streamline housing services.
“Yung pagpoproseso ng mga papeles, sobrang daming opisina, sobrang daming tao, sobrang daming pirma ang kailangan na, yung pakiramdam ko lang, kung gusto nating panilbihan yung mga mahihirap, sana ‘wag na silang mahirapan pa. [In the processing of the papers, there are so many offices, so many people, so many signatures needed which, I feel, if you really want to serve the poor, hopefully we shouldn’t make it harder for them],” she adds.
As the new HUDCC head, Robredo is set to attend future Cabinet meetings as part of the President’s “official family.
