ALBERTA, Canada – Homeland Security reported two Canadian teens who inadvertently committed an international crime as they crossed the border while being distracted from playing Pokemon Go.
The two teenagers, which are both from Coutts, Alberta, were busy with their phone and was fully engaged in the location-based Pokemon Go app, when they lost track of which country they were in, crossing illegally into the US on Thursday.
David Caplan mentioned in his article for ABC News that the teenagers were apprehended near Sweet Grass, Montana and picked up by border patrol agents.
The two players were briefly detained and then reunited with their mother at a patrol station on the Canadian side. Both teenagers claimed they were unaware that they had crossed the border.
“Both juveniles were so captivated by their Pokemon Go games that they lost track of where they were, said Michael Rappold, the agency’s public affairs officer, as quoted in an article by AJC.com.
“They crossed the international border inadvertently, but agents were able to reunite them with their mother,” Rappold added.
The agents did not reveal the identity and the age of the teenager players.
The new game had been criticized because of its safety hazard.
In Japan, just a few hours after the Pokemon Go was released, a university student has been rushed to the hospital after taking a tumble while playing the game.
An article by Mashable said the accident happened at Kindai University in Osaka at around late morning.
The male student was busy playing the game and had fallen down the stairs and hit his head. An ambulance was called immediately as a large amount of blood oozed in the student’s forehead.
This month, two players fell off a 100-foot cliff edge in Encinitas, North San Diego County while playing the game. Both were taken to hospital after suffering serious injuries.
