Ben Heinrichs was working on his truck in his family’s workshop with his dog Buddy when a fire accident took place.
“I just took off running. I said we need to get help, and he just took off,” Heinrichs told Associated Press.
Buddy ran and encountered Officer Terrence Shanigan, who was responding to Heinrichs’ call but lost his way in the never-ending turns and fork roads.
“He wasn’t running from me, but was leading me,” Shanigan said. “I just felt like I was being led … it’s just one of those things that we’re thinking on the same page for that brief moment.”
In the video from Alaska State Troopers, Buddy looked back from time to time, waiting for the officer, before running again, until Shanigan reached the burning workshop.
The workshop was completely burned down, but Heinrichs’ house remained intact.
Buddy was awarded by the Alaska State Troopers for his “diligence and assistance.” He received a stainless steel bowl, a certificate of appreciation, and a big bone.
