A cheerleader died surrounded by her family and her boyfriend after battling c@ncer for a year.
Nina Poeta, a senior at Seymour High School in Connecticut, had an MRI scan last November 2013 after complaining about severe headaches. Her doctors discovered she had a malignant brain tumor, which couldn’t be removed via surgery.
Upon hearing the news, the whole community worked together and raised more than P1,880,620 ($ 40,000) to help the family pay for Poeta’s ongoing radiation therapy. They also create a Facebook page entitled “Poeta Strong” to give updates on the teen’s condition.
The 17-year old continued going to class and participated in Seymour’s cheerleading team, which won state championships that year.
Despite the best efforts by Poeta and the community, c@ncer gradually spread in her body. She became wheelchair-bound and eventually died in November 2014.
A close friend announced her passing on Facebook and thanked people who supported Poetra throughout her fight with c@ncer. She wrote:
“Nina was at home surrounded by her mom and dad and her sister, Cara. It was a calm and peaceful moment at 11pm on November 1st, All Saints’ Day.
“The Poeta family would like to thank you for your love and support during Nina’s difficult journey. Their angel is now with the other angels in heaven.”
Many people visited her funeral. Cheerleaders from neighboring high schools brought their pompoms as a tribute to a very talented gymnast and cheerleader.
As ViralThread wrote, “She died knowing she was loved.”
