- DOT is looking into featuring six of the country’s top tourist destinations in the 2017 Miss Universe pageant
- Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Boracay, Cebu, Palawan, and Manila are the locations DOT is eyeing
- The coronation night will be held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on January 30, 2017
After much anticipation, the Department of Tourism (DOT) confirmed during a press conference on Thursday, July 28, that the Philippines will host the next Miss Universe pageant.
Reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach openly admitted that if she would have it her way, she would love to crown her successor in our motherland.
Wurtzbach even met with President Rodrigo Duterte earlier in July in her active campaign for the possibility to host the 2017 Miss Universe pageant.
Both Wurtzbach and the DOT are positive that hosting one of the biggest international pageants will be good for the country’s image.
According to Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo, the DOT is looking into featuring six possible locations for the said pageant to attract tourists, but the coronation night will definitely be held in Manila, as per an article published by GMA News.
“Kino-consider namin ang Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Boracay, Cebu, Palawan, and of course, ang main event would be in Manila,” Teo revealed.

While all six locations are popular tourist destinations, Davao and Cagayan de Oro have a particular significance, as the said provinces are hometowns to President Duterte and the current Miss Universe, respectively.
“We have a president who comes from Mindanao and our Miss Universe is from Mindanao, so I think it is the best time for us to do Miss Universe in the Philippines,” Teo said.
She also said this will put the spotlight on the Philippines and the search for more information about the destinations once beauty pageant fans and enthusiasts learn that the country will host the Miss Universe pageant.
“We expect tourists to come,” she said. “Tataas ‘yung tourists arrival natin [Our tourist arrival rate will increase.]”
The coronation night will be held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on January 30, 2017. The competing beauty queens will start arriving by the 15th of January and will spend two weeks in the country.
