Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Ismael “Mike” Sueno has ordered the conduct of a sweeping lifestyle check among the members of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Sueno, in a bid to remove from service police officials engaged in illegal activities, instructed Philippine National Police Chief Ronald De La Rosa to proceed with the lifestyle check starting with the three active police generals namely, Police Regional Office 6 Director Chief Supt. Bernardo Diaz, former National Capital Regional Police Office Chief Police Director Joel Pagdilao and former Quezon City Police District Director Edgardo Tinio, who were tagged by President Rodrigo Duterte as protectors of drug syndicates.
Also named as protectors of drug lords were retired PNP Deputy Director General Marcelo Garbo Jr., who is currently out of the country, and former police general and now the incumbent Daanbantayan, Cebu Mayor Vicente Loot.
All five, however, denied the president’s accusation.
The Interior secretary said public servants must possess honesty, integrity and professionalism in the conduct of their duties and that those who amassed questionable wealth must explain how they acquired their assets.
“As public servants, we are expected to be exemplars of honesty, integrity and professionalism. So if the policemen or any other civil servant for that matter have acquired unexplained wealth while in active service, they have a lot of explaining to do,” the Interior secretary said in a statement published by the state-run Philippines News Agency.
Sueno said he had instructed the National Police Commission to look into the supposed illegal activities of Diaz, Tinio and Pagdilao. He also instructed DILG lawyers to gather evidence and build a case against Mayor Loot.
