Following President Rodrigo Duterte’s demand for an explanation on the New People’s Army’s (NPA) ambush on government militiamen in Davao Del Norte, the National Democratic Front of the Philippines said it will conduct a probe on the attack.
On Wednesday, July 27, or two days after President Duterte announced a ceasefire with the communist rebels, the NPA waylaid members of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU). A militiaman was killed and four others were wounded in the attack.
According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Fidel Agcaoili, spokesman of the NDFP peace panel, said they have talked with Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre Bello III, concurrently the Presidential Adviser on the peace process, regarding the ambush.
“We informed Secretary Bello that we will have to look into the report because as far as the NDFP Panel is concerned, the NPA is on active defense mode since 26 July as announced by Ka Oris, the newly appointed Head of the National Operational Command of the NPA,” Agcaoili said.
Ka Oris said the shift to active defense mode is the NPA’s response to President Duterte’s declaration of ceasefire.
“Under the direction of the CPP (Communist Party of the Philippines), the National Operational Command of the New People’s Army orders all territorial and unit commands of the NPA, including all units of the people’s militias, to stay on active defense mode as we welcome the unilateral ceasefire declaration yesterday by GRP (Government of the Republic of the Philippines) President Rodrigo Duterte and await its operational details,” Madlos said on July 26.
President Duterte threatened to cancel the ceasefire if no explanation is given to him. He has given the communist rebels until Thursday night to explain.
