MANILA, Philippines – Philippines Airlines (PAL) chairman and CEO Lucio Tan has expressed his support for President Rodrigo Duterte’s plan to decongest the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
In a statement shared by PAL on its Facebook page, Tan said he is fully backing the transfer of flights from NAIA to airports in either Sangley, Clark or Subic.
“We declare our full support to the new government’s decision to move the operations of general aviation out of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to either Sangley, Clark, or Subic,” Tan’s letter read.
With the decongestion, Tan said passenger experience as well as airline operations will greatly improve.
As a gesture of goodwill to Duterte, the businessman also announced the move-out of his private fleet from NAIA.
“The declaration of support includes moving out of NAIA my small fleet of private jets as gesture of compliance to the Department of Transportation initiative,” Tan said.
Earlier, Transportation Secretary Art Tugade said he hopes to increase aviation space by 18-22 percent by removing a good chunk of general aviation operations.
The flights to be transferred out from NAIA include commercial and chartered flights, cargo carriers, aviation training, corporate flights, and aircraft maintenance.
The move is seen to greatly decrease congestion in NAIA, especially the 44-hectare General Aviation Area which houses dozens of private and commercial aircraft.
Duterte made the decongestion of NAIA one of his key campaign promises.
