MANILA, Philippines – A South Korean national reportedly killed himself after being denied entry at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Thursday evening, July 21.
The victim was identified in an InterAksyon article as Sang Kwan An, a Korean carrying a passport with number M21656215. His travel documents showed he was born July 27, 1966.
He reportedly arrived in the country on board Cebu Pacific Flight no. 5J311 from Taipei.
The man turned out to be a fugitive from South Korea as his name came up on the Interpol’s black list. An is reportedly wanted in his country over an investment scam case amounting to $ 700,000.
In an interview with GMA News, a Department of Transportation (DOTr) official confirmed An’s death.
“Ang nangyari [What happened was], he came in 3:30 a.m., (Cebu Pacific) 5J flight from Taipei. (He) was denied entry by Philippine immigration,” said Cherrie Mercado of DOTr.
Upon checking in with the immigration, the alleged fugitive was arrested by airport police and detained at the holding area of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) while authorities are coordinating with their South Korean embassy and the Interpol.
BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said they received a call around 8:15 pm from an airport unit telling them that the man apparently took his own life inside the exclusion room of the NAIA Terminal 3.
