Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, incoming President Rodrigo Duterte’s defeated vice presidential running mate, said he has forwarded to Duterte and incoming Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Ronald Dela Rosa the proposal to increase the policemen’s minimum salary to P50,000 a month.
A copy of the proposal will also be submitted to incoming Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno for further scrutiny.
GMA News’ Ian Cruz quoted Cayetano as saying that the salary increase is the fulfillment of Duterte’s campaign promise. The senator expressed optimism that the increase will be implemented before Christmas.
“It’s very doable. So, if we have a supportive House of Representatives and Senate, merong pera [there’s money], as early as before Christmas, maibibigay na natin ito sa ating mga pulis [we can give this to our policemen],” the senator said at the sidelines of a PNP event in Davao City.
“Sinubmit na namin ‘to sa pangulo at incoming chief PNP para tingnan ang numbers. Next stop nito ay sa budget secretary,” Cayetano added.

Cayetano said the P50,000 minimum wage will apply to rookie cops or those with the rank of Police Officer 1. He said this amount includes the policeman’s base pay and allowance. Police generals could receive as much as P100,000 a month.
If the proposed salary increase will be approved by the Congress, rookie cops could expect a take-home pay of P40,000.
“If the tax is 20%, you’ll take home P40,000,” Cayetano said.
