A group of artists in Portugal decorated a street by using washing machine drums and turning it into colorful lamps.
Six months and 133 lamps, that’s what it took the cultural group Teatro Metaphora to decorate a street in Camara de Lobos at Madeira Island for its annual Sao Pedro Festival. It was done through a collaborative effort of the group’s volunteers, government employees of the town and donors.
“The ‘dream of a summer night’ is a style Environment Decoration Steam-punk made of old parts of washing machines. 133 drums are transformed into lamps with lights of various colors to illuminate the streets of Saint John of God during the celebration of St. Peter,” the group said in a Facebook post.
The project mostly used discarded drums found on the streets. They also used some that were donated to them. They initially targeted 100 drums for the beautification project but the donations just kept coming until it hit 133.
“This project has a meaning not only visual but also ecological awareness and demand for the sustainable use of resources, promoting the reuse of materials,” Teatro Metaphora also said in its post.
