A self-contained classroom that can be transported to and from far-flung areas in the country where electricity and connectivity are deficient was recently launched by the Department of Education in partnership with Microsoft Philippines.
Microsoft Philippines Education Lead David Tapang said the ECG project contains everything from the content, technology, and the power itself, an article written by Kiersnerr Gerwin Tacadena on GMA News Online stated.
According to Tapang, the ECG project generates its own power as well as its own water, and can be connected to the internet through television frequencies via TV White space, the unused VHF and UHF TV channels that could be used to deliver broadband access over wide areas.
Tapang added that for its energy, the EGG uses solar panels which are used to store at least three days worth of energy to power the classroom.
Equipped with an Atmospheric Water Generation unit, which pulls humidity from the atmosphere that can produce potable water and can cool the classroom, the modernized classroom can accommodate 30 students at a time with each pair sharing one tablet for their use. Strategically placed in front of the classroom is a flat screen TV.
Meanwhile, DepEd undersecretary Rey Laguda disclosed that the project will provide opportunities for children living in the remotest communities to widen their knowledge through the use of modern technology.
Laguda noted that on July, an ECG will be set up in Bohol. Teachers in the area will be trained on how to use the equipment, he added.
The successful outcome of the pilot unit will result to more ECGs which will be deployed across several provinces in the coming months.
