The Cleveland Cavaliers won their first NBA championship in franchise history beating the defending champion Golden State Warriors, and became the first team to overturn a 3-1 deficit in the best-of-seven NBA finals — making the June 19 game an instant classic in NBA Finals history.
3-time ‘Most Valuable Player’ title holder, LeBron James, fulfilled his promise from two years ago to bring a championship to Cleveland, which ended its 52-year long major sports title drought.
“The curse is over,” said NBA commissioner Adam Silver.
James almost single-handedly carried his team back into this series and finished with 27 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds as the Cavs captured their first championship in franchise history and gave their city its first major sports win since the Browns won the NFL title in 1964, as per an article published by Daily Mail.
Cleveland’s historic win was far from easy as they went against the 73-win greatest regular-season basketball team in NBA history, the Golden State Warriors, led by Steph Curry, which beat the mark Michael Jordan set for Chicago Bulls back in 1995-1996, a BBC story disclosed.
The game was close throughout; the Golden State leading 49-42 at half-time with Draymond Green carrying the team. It was locked at 89-89 with 3:40 left, and Cavs’ Kyrie Irving broke the tie with a terrific three-pointer moment.
Cavs won 93-89 after Green fouled James. James made 1 of the 2 free throws, which clinched a 4-point winning margin for the team.
“This is what I came back for. This is unbelievable,” said James. “We’re in the record books. We’re the first team ever to come back from a 3-1 deficit. This is special.”
It was a huge disappointment for the Warriors being unable to bag a back-to-back championship, which would have staked their claim as the ‘greatest basketball team of all time’; having to win more games in a season than any team in NBA history.
“It will be a good image for us over the summer and all next season to remember so that we can come back stronger,” Curry said.
