Aside from the solid Davao votes that President-elect Rodrigo Duterte garnered during the May 9 elections, it was a surprise for Duterte’s team to find that he got almost million votes from the City of Cebu. It was one of the cities that contributed greatly to his win. He was mainly campaigned by ONE Cebu coalition. He is also related to the province’s Durano political clan. With this, the 71-year old former Davao Mayor, decided to go to Cebu yesterday, June 25, 2016, for a thanksgiving party with his supporters.
“I really wanted to come to Cebu to thank you personally because I got many votes here,”he announced in the crowd during the event. He also added “I will work towards federalism. I’m okay if I beat corruption and drugs,”. It can be recalled that Duterte vowed to eradicate crimes within 3-6 months, especially drug-related crimes. He emphasized in the event that drugs and drug related crimes are one of the major issues that the country should focus on eliminating. He shared that ‘shabu‘ was even prepared inside prison, specifically New Bilibid Prison, the country’s main prison. Quoting from his speech “”Even a small packet of shabu can create a monstrous problem. It’s a good thing that I’m mayor. Look at Davao.” Davao is specifically known for its low crime rate. It was mainly because of Duterte’s aggressive leadership.
The event was packed with Duterte’s supporters with over 2,500 present despite late afternoon rains. The event was entitled “One Love, One Nation” and was conducted at Sugbo South Coastal Properties. It also had musical performances.
Duterte has also lived in Cebu as he was born in Leyte, before they moved to Mindanao when he was 5 years old.
