It looks like apart from the horrific loss of 50 lives which was caused by the abominable shooting of a single gunman who was dismally fueled by hate after he witnessed two men kissing, the incident also prompted the world to show more love for the LGBT community.
After #TwoMenKissing went viral and trended online, people from around the globe displayed their support to the beautiful ‘act of defiance’ against the Orlando night club massacre.
And the pouring out of love and support does not stop there.
According to Rolling Stone, over 60 Broadway stars are recording the 1965 iconic hit song, ‘What the World Needs Now is Love’ to commemorate the hapless victims of the mass shooting. The project, which is called Broadway for Orlando, was initiated by Broadway Records President Van Dean, musical director/radio host Seth Rudetsky and his husband, producer James Wesley. Rudetsky said in a statement:
“The Broadway community was so terribly shaken and devastated by the horrific tragedy in Orlando. Everyone wanted to do something as quickly as possible that would truly make a difference.
“Our community of artists has banded together as we always do to show we can end this cycle of violence and intolerance. Love WILL prevail!”, he added.
Among the artists performing are Audra McDonald, Idina Menzel, Wayne Brady, Matthew Broderick, Sara Bareilles, Kristen Bell, Gloria Estefan, Megan Hilty, Rosie O’Donnell, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sutton Foster, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Bernadette Peters, Fran Drescher, Nathan Lane, Sean Hayes, and Whoopi Goldberg.
The song, which will be available for download on Monday through Broadway Records’ website and soon on iTunes, and will be sold at $ 1.99. All proceeds will go to assist the LGBT Center of Central Florida.
