The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) is currently on high alert after a series of “explosion-type” earthquakes have been recorded within the vicinity of Mount Kanlaon on Saturday.
In an article written by Joseph Tristan Roxas for GMA News Online on June 19, 2016, it was disclosed that Phivolcs has released an official bulletin regarding the status of the volcano on Sunday morning.
“In the past 24 hours, Kanlaon Volcano’s seismic monitoring network recorded a total of eight (8) volcanic earthquakes, including explosion-type earthquakes,” the statement read; adding that “a series of steam and ash eruption events” reaching a height of 1,500 meters were also recorded starting 9:19 a.m. on June 18.
Moderate emissions of steam white plumes were also observed to have reached up to 400 meters, as seen by residents living near the area.
Meanwhile, light ashfall was reported on the western side of the volcano, specifically in Barangays Ara-al, San Miguel and Yubo in La Carlota City; Barangay Sag-ang in La Castellana; and Barangay Ilijan in Bago City.
Last November, the Phivolcs placed the volcano under alert level 1, which means that “it is at an abnormal condition and is in a period of current unrest.”
Local government officials from the cities and municipalities surrounding the area have already issued reminders that a permanent danger zone has been established at the volcano’s 4-kilometer radius; saying that entering the said area is strictly prohibited.
The Phivolcs has also advised the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) to discourage pilots from “flying close to the volcano’s summit as airborne ash from a sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.“
