- Senator Miriam Santiago is in ICU
- Her husband said she suffered complications
- Jun Santiago said his wife is “bearing well with her trademark sense of humor”
Cancer-stricken Senator Miriam Santiago is in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Makati Medical Center, her husband said.
Narciso “Jun” Santiago said his wife was rushed by an ambulance to the hospital on Monday, May 30. It was not clear why the lady senator was brought to the hospital, but Mr. Santiago said she is sick and had suffered complications.
Mr. Santiago said Miriam was transferred from her private room to the ICU on Tuesday night, May 31.
He advised the public that visitors are not allowed and that gifts, including flowers and other blooms will not be accepted. He assured though that his wife is “bearing well with her trademark sense of humor.”
“Miriam said that she thanks all her family, friends, supporters, fans, and others who helped pray for her recovery and sent their well-wishes on Facebook,” he said in the statement published in the senator’s website.
The feisty senator was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2014, but she said she was cured of the disease. However, on May 24, she wrote Senate President Franklin Drilon to inform him that she is extending her medical leave after she suffered anorexia as a side effect of one of her anti-cancer medications, which render her “physically and mentally weak.”
Senator Santiago ran and lost in the May 9 presidential elections won by longtime Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
