MANILA, Philippines – Commenting on President-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s planned burial for late strongman Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, the latter’s son and namesake Sen. Bongbong Marcos said the move can help close a decades-long chapter and let the country move forward.
“I think it will bring closure not only to my family but to the rest of the country. This is something that has been somehow in the consciousness of the Filipino people. This continuing partisan exchange that has been going over 30 years can finally be put to rest. I think that is the significance,” Rappler quoted Marcos as saying.
Duterte’s decision to bury Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani has drawn praise from his supporters and disgust from his critics.
Asked when they plan to transfer his father’s remains, the younger Marcos said the burial might take place in September.
“September 2016 was the earliest date mentioned, maybe September,” he said. “But there’s really nothing more definite, even September might not be final.”
Marcos, a vice presidential candidate in the recently-concluded national elections, also aired his willingness to serve under Duterte’s Cabinet should he be offered a post in the new administration.
“I am at heart a public servant and if I’m called to duty in any way whatsoever, it is an honor for me to serve in any capacity the incoming president would feel that I can contribute. I would be happy to do that,” he said.
“‘Yan naman talaga ang buhay namin na ang Marcos ay magsilbi lamang [That’s how the Marcoses live, they serve],” the senator added.
