- DepEd Sec. Armin Luistro hopes next administration will continue the K to 12 program
- DepEd is implementing the senior high school program this school year
- Luistro says he hopes to meet the new DepEd officials 30 days before stepping down
With the launching of the senior high school program in the upcoming school year and over a month left until the new administration takes over, Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Armin Luistro expressed hopes that the K to 12 program championed by President Benigno Aquino III will continue.
In preparation for the changes in administration, Luistro says the Department has now delegated decision-making, budgeting, and the overall implementation of the senior high school program to the school principals and school superintendents.
Luistro, as well as a number of DepEd officials, will be stepping down on June 30 together with President Aquino, giving way to new DepEd officials under the new President who may not necessarily fully understand the program with just one month in office.
“Nandoon na tayo sa huling yugto eh. Nagsimula na tayo sa senior high school. Pagbaba namin two weeks old pa lang ang Grade 11. Ang ginawa namin, yung mga principals and superintendents namin, sinabi namin na sila na talaga ang mag-implement niyan. [We are now in the final part. We are starting the senior high school. When we step down, Grade 11 will just be two weeks old. What we did, we told our principals and superintendents, that they will be the ones who will really be implementing that.] Don’t expect that the new [administration] will be able to understand that in the first month,” he explained to GMA News.
Luistro emphasized that he hopes to meet with the incoming Education Secretary at least one month before the new administration takes over in order to have a smooth transition period between the two administrations.
“Mayroon tayong bagong programa na senior high school, sana maipasa namin doon sa susunod na executive team ang mga kailangan pang sundan at i-improve. [We have a new program that is the senior high school, so hopefully we can pass it on to the next executive team what needs to be followed up on and improved],” he said.
The Secretary also says he considers the K to 12 program as his greatest accomplishment in the DepEd, despite criticisms from some sectors.
“Kailangan na lang niyan yung tamang panahon para matapos. Palagay ko napatunayan ng DepEd na kaya pala ang malawakan at malalim na reporma sa pagtutulungan, kahit may criticism. [It only needs the right time for it to finish. I think DepEd has proven that we can implement widespread and deepened reforms through helping each other out, even with criticism],” Luistro said.
