HATAY, Turkey – A 111-year-old woman with 120 grandchildren, has revealed the secret of long life as moderate eating and drinking and laughing as much as possible.
Nick Reilly mentioned in his article for Yahoo News published on May 5 that Fayikiye Soker, who is from a village near the town of Samandag, Hatay Province in southern Turkey, is one of the country’s oldest women.
Soker said she has always followed a healthy lifestyle and has hardly ever needed to see a doctor in her long life.
The grandma of 120 grandkids and great-grandkids is known for laughing and joking and highly believes that her happiness has been a huge source of energy.
“Young people should take more care of what they eat and drink. I did and that’s why I’m still alive and will live a good while longer,” Soker said.
“God granted me such a long life. I hope God gives everybody long life. I think one of the secrets is to laugh loud and often,” she added.
The cheerful grandma is delighted to share her centuries-old memories with her grandchildren, and can recall the first time she saw an airplane.
“We were kids back then. Suddenly we heard a great noise coming. I said: ‘What is that?’” she said.
“Then we saw it and I said: ‘Look, a big bird is coming!’ We had never seen anything like it before. How could we know?” she added.
Soker has eight children who have given her 120 grandchildren, along with great-grandchildren and even two great, great grandchildren.
An article by Sibel Abdiu for The Mirror published on May 5 said that Soker worked as a midwife in her younger days.
Hanifi Soker, 42, who is one of her grandsons, said that official records revealed her date of birth is July 1, 1904.
“We are so happy that she is still with us. May God give her an even longer life,” he said.
“I hope we live as long as she did. And I hope we will be as healthy as my granny. She is a living legend,” he added.
Soker now lives in the border town of Samandag, living with daughter-in-law Feride Soker, who has been her companion since her husband died in 1984.
“We have been comrades to each other for 32 years. Our relation is a mother-daughter relation rather than a daughter-in-law mother-in-law relation,” Feride said.
