Newly elected senator Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao decided not to join the Philippine contingent to the Rio 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil so he could focus his 100% attention on his job as a lawmaker.
Pacquiao, who was criticized for absenteeism during his two terms as a Congressman because of his boxing training, is aiming a perfect attendance in the senate.
“Kung kaya nating iperpekto, bakit hindi [If we could make it perfect, why not],” he told reporters at a Gym in Davao City where he played a friendly basketball game with defeated vice presidential candidate Senator Alan Peter Cayetano and incoming President Rodrigo Duterte’s executive assistant Bong Go.
“I did not accept the offer to join the Olympics. I am about to start (my stint as senator). I am excited to work and then I won’t show up again. It would be embarrassing to those who elected me if I don’t show up in the first month of my service. The responsibility (at the Senate) is different from the one in Congress, which only covers districts. In the Senate, it’s nationwide,” he added.
To prepare himself for his Senate stint, the 8-time division champion said he will take up a course on legislature starting June.
“I’m studying of course. In fact, this June may legislative course ako,” he said.
Philstar noted that since 2010, Pacquiao has been attending a course on legislation and governance at the state-run Development Academy of the Philippines.
Pacquiao vows to make laws that would benefit the poor. He said he would push for free quality education from elementary to college.
