- Pia Cayetano has been tapped to join president-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s transition committee
- Cayetano was asked to help in identifying women leaders for the key positions in Duterte’s Cabinet
- Duterte’s camp vowed to have a “gender-balanced” government
Elected Taguig Congresswoman Pia Cayetano has joined the transition team of presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte to provide a more gender-balanced government said Duterte’s spokesperson Peter Laviña.
Cayetano was tapped to help and guide the transition committee in identifying women leaders for various government posts to ensure the role of women in the Duterte administration, as per an article published by GMA News.
“I know for a fact that there are women who are qualified for any of the positions. What I want to ensure is as early as the selection process, the names of these women-candidates are given,” Cayetano said in a press briefing in Davao City on Thursday.
“It is important that we have a gender-balanced leadership, that the voice of women are heard, that the concerns of women are addressed at the highest level. Because after that, it will flow,” she added.
Cayetano stressed that women’s participation should not be measured by the number of women in the key government roles.
“At the end of the day, whether it is a man or a woman occupying that top-level position, we want to be sure that that person is gender-sensitive,” she said. “[The existing bureaucracy has] so many in-grown talents that are waiting to be discovered, and a lot of them happen to be women, we have to give them that opportunity.”
Mentioned in an article published by the Inquirer, Laviña shared that the transition team has already a shortlist of possible officials for the key positions in the Duterte administration. Laviña, however, refused to divulge the information until Duterte has been officially proclaimed as the winner for the presidential seat.
