MANILA, Philippines – Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) will soon have an exclusive passport application establishment in Ortigas provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
An article by InterAksyon published on May 31 said that DFA spokesman Charles Jose has revealed a new passport center will be situated in the DFA’s existing consular office in Robinsons Galleria in Ortigas; a place which is just across the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) building.
The new center will benefit a lot of Filipino workers who process their application for work abroad in POEA.
“This shows that we are giving importance to our OFWs and the contribution that they give to the country’s economy,” Jose said.
The center will be exclusive to OFWs who can just walk in even without an appointment onlin; which the general public is required to do.
Jose said that while the center is not yet operational, all the existing courtesy lanes for OFWs in the DFA consular offices nationwide will remain open to process their applications.
Meanwhile, Jose also revealed in the press briefing that starting June, all passport applicants who didn’t show up on their appointment date will be banned from securing a new slot for 30 days.
An article by Kicker Daily said that the DFA spokesperson revealed that no-show passport applicants had caused a two-month waiting period for hundreds of applicants waiting in line.
Jose said that 47 percent of the approximately 15,000 passport applications daily do not show up on the date of their appointment.
“This policy will be enforced this month and we expect a smooth flow of application by September as soon as the backlogs have been addressed,” Jose said.
