- Poll watchdog rejected Marcos’ request to stop the partial, unofficial tallying of votes
- PPCRV spokesperson said people have the right to transparency
- She also said only Comelec can compel them to stop the fast count
MANILA, Philippines – The Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) has rejected Sen. Bongbong Marcos’ request to cease the fast counting of votes even as his rival Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo currently holds 200,000-vote lead over him in the vice presidential race.
In an interview, PPCRV spokesperson Command Center Operations Head Ana de Villa-Singson said they won’t stop the fast count in keeping with the spirit of electoral transparency.
“The Filipino people have the right to know,” she told the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “This is a democracy.”
At the same time, Singson said it is only the Commission on Elections (Comelec) that can order them to stop the tallying.
“It is his right to make an appeal but it is the right of the people to know the results of the election. It is the Comelec that has the authority to stop the airing of results because it is the Comelec that gives us the data at the PPCRV and they give us the permission to show this to the public. We will abide by what Comelec tells us to do,” she said.
Comelec has yet to respond to the solon’s request which was made shortly after Robredo overtook him in the hotly-contested race.
Marcos earlier cited his own camp’s internal surveys as evidence of a purported vote-shaving operation being conducted in favor of Robredo.
“It was a very measured increase in the votes that doesn’t seem to follow what our internal surveys are saying,” he said , in reference to how his million-vote lead over Robredo was eliminated in the course of a single day.
