- Senator weighs in on the source of Davao City mayor’s alleged billions
- He says Duterte’s wealth possibly from illegal sources
- He also says he’s still digging deeper into mayor’s alleged corrupt activities
MANILA, Philippines – Amid the latest clash between him and the popular presidential bet Rodrigo Duterte, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV vowed to continue his investigation on the Davao City mayor’s alleged involvement in corrupt activities.
“We are piecing things together. This needs a deep and thorough investigation. You will be surprised how deep and big it is. That’s why it’s baffling to think that he could be the next president of the country,” Rappler quoted him as saying.
Bringing up Duterte’s alleged P2.4 billion in his bank accounts, the solon said he believes the money came from the mayor’s various illegal activities.
“If it came from illegal activities: illegal drugs, smuggling, and a lot more. Those are the possibilities. But I am not yet ready to pinpoint specifically where it came from,” he said.
Trillanes then specifically pointed to Duterte’s decision to free 8 Chinese nationals who were arrested after they were caught with drugs as red flag of his alleged involvement.
“Mayor Duterte emphasizes that he kills drug lords, but what did he do with these 8 Chinese nationals? He fought for their release, and why? In the spirit of Chinese New Year, that’s his excuse,” he said. “The question here is maybe he is only going after competition. Just maybe. Something we need to think about.”
A fierce critic of the mayor, Trillanes and Duterte have been at loggerheads especially after the senator accused the latter of allegedly keeping a secret P211 million account at the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI).
In turn, the mayor has dismissed the allegations as black propaganda and countered that Trillanes was just out to gain media mileage to save his vice presidential bid.
