- Duterte failed to impress business leaders in his keynote speech prior the May 9 elections which casted doubts for the business leaders
- The influential business groups encourages Duterte to work with them in sustain economic growth
After a speedy and generally peaceful elections, various business groups are changing their minds about their pre-election criticism of presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte and are expressing their full support and cooperation for the new administration to sustain the country’s economic growth.
“We congratulate the newly-elected leaders. We assure them of the cooperation and support of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) in providing a stable and enabling environment for further growth of the economy. In full partnership with all sectors of our nation, we join in the effort to create more businesses, more employments to benefit more people,” PCCI president George Barcelon said in a statement.
The Makati Business Club expressed that the group is ready to be an active and participative partner of government in ensuring sustainable and inclusive growth that benefits not just a select few but all Filipinos, as per an article published by The Standard.
“We call on all Filipinos to come together, to support our new leaders. Let us focus on those aspirations that unite us, rather than on the issues that divide us. After all, despite our divisions, we all aspire for the common goal of authentic freedom and inclusive development,” MBC said.
Duterte failed to impress both MBC and PCCI members in his keynote speech last April 27 2016, a week prior the May 9 elections, due to the influential groups’ uncertainty about Duterte’s economic plans and policy-making experience.
Mentioned in an article published by the Inquirer, both groups were enthused by the orderly and sound elections held last Monday, May 9.
“It set a high standard of quality for free and fair election in the future. With the tabulation and transmission of a big portion of votes all over the country overnight, the automated process has gained public confidence in our democratic process,” Barcelon said.
The business leaders also encouraged Duterte to reach out to them in lining up priority policies and charting the sustained growth of the Philippine economy.
