I know the feeling. It’s okay to cry.
These are the words of Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach in a touching letter addressed to beauty queens who failed to win a title during the last Binibining Pilipinas 2016 pageant.
In an article that was posted on ABS-CBN News, it was disclosed that Pia shared, via an open letter posted on Instagram, how she turned her disappointment into the driving force for her journey towards the Miss Universe crown.
“Now I know that the pageant there (in the Philippines) is over, it got me thinking, ‘how are the rest of the girls doing?’ Because you know what, I’ve been there. I’ve stood behind the winner and went home empty handed on my second try,” she wrote in the caption of her photo with all the contestants taken during her last trip to the Philippines.
“My friends were there to comfort me as I kept saying ‘I really tried’ over and over again while crying in the parking lot of the venue. I even got criticized for that. But now that I’m seeing this photo, girls, let me tell you this, I know the feeling of coming home and waking up in the morning realizing that there’s nothing,” she narrated.
“No activity today, no training, nothing. You’re basically back to square one. That’s it. The pageant is over and you’ll see the winners on TV everyday. And I’m not sure if it was the same for all of you, but I was heartbroken,” she added.
The beauty queen, on the other hand, gave some advice to those who did not make it in the pageant.
“It’s okay to cry, it’s okay to feel ashamed. My advice would be — Keep yourselves busy, go to your family, take a break and think. Think about your next step,” she said. “Now I mentioned this already to you before during prelims that all of these is temporary. Even my crown is temporary. But it’s what you do after that’s important. What did you learn? What is your passion now? What do you wanna pursue next? Or better yet, are you gonna try again?”
Moreover, she congratulated the candidates for their efforts before and during the pageant.
“Girls, congratulations on making it this far to one of the most competitive national pageants in the world. Pageants are a huge deal in the Philippines and the girls are dedicated, studying and training like athletes,” she noted.
“So whatever you pursue, continue to make us proud. I’ve also faced disappointments before, not just in pageants but in other aspects of my life. So that pain, use it. And that goes the same with the other girls who did not make it in their countries. Remember, the true measure of a queen is what she does after the pageant night,” she continued.
As of posting, Wurtzbach’s Instagram post has gained nearly that 19,000 likes.
