Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte’s executive assistant Christopher “Bong” Go said public officials, especially the future members of the Cabinet of the incoming Duterte administration, should shun luxurious vehicles and instead use simple cars.
There will be no more luxury cars for public officials once the Davao City mayor assumes the presidency on June 30 as he plans to push for austerity in the government, his top aide told reporters.
CNN Philippines’ Ina Andolong posted on her Twitter account: “Go says no luxury cars for public officials once Duterte is pres. In Davao, he says officials have Crosswinds and Avanzas.”
Bong Go said Duterte scoffs at luxurious vehicles. As Davao City mayor, he uses pick-ups, while his staff uses Asian Utility Vehicles (i.e. Mitsubishi Adventure, Isuzu Crosswind).
Auto Industriya said Duterte drives around Davao City on his Isuzu D-Max or Isuzu Mu-X.
The president-apparent wants government officials to set good examples by using more modest cars.
Duterte once shared that during his stint as Representative of the First District of Davao City from 1998 to 2001, he refused to use the number “8” license plate assigned to motor vehicles of Congressmen because he found it “corny.”
But once he starts working as president of the country, he is entitled to use the presidential limousine – a black bulletproof Mercedes Benz with a license plate bearing number 1. Whether he will let himself to be chauffeured in the luxurious presidential car is yet unknown.
