In an unexpected turn of events, the mayoral race in Bocaue, Bulacan had to resort to a game of coin toss to break the tie between two contending candidates.
Liberal Party member Joni Villanueva and Jim Valerio both received 16,694 votes in the May 9 election, as per an article published by Philstar.
Tension rose between both camps as integrity and fairness of the process were questioned.
As cited in an article published by the Inquirer, Comelec Municipal Board of Canvassers Chairman Deogracias Danao stated that pursuant to Comelec Resolution No. 10083 or the “General Instructions for the Board of Canvassers on the Consolidation/Canvass and Transmission of Votes” under Sec. 11, Letter D-II, after recording in its minutes the fact of having candidates with same number of votes instructed generally the board of canvasser to immediately notify both candidates to appear before the Board for “drawing of lots” to determine and proclaim the winning candidate for the position of municipal mayor.
Danao officiated the coin toss, with Villanueva getting the tail side of the coin after Valerio chose the head side of the coin.
After winning best out of 3, Villanueva was immediately declared mayor.
