Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano said on Friday that prioritizing the salary increases of the members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) would not be an easy task for the incoming administration; even calling the proposal as a “leap of faith.”
In an article written by Dharel Placido for ABS-CBN News on May 28, 2016, it was disclosed that the former running mate of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte admitted that other government workers would surely react negatively if the present pay scale will be distorted for the benefit of uniformed personnel alone.
“We’re going to take the leap of faith na magbubusina muna sa ibang government offices na ‘pasensya kayo ‘di muna natin masasabay-sabay’ [We’re going to take the leap of faith that we will ask the other government offices to give way saying ‘We apologize since we cannot make it for all at once’],” Cayetano said.
Earlier this year, Duterte promised not only to increase but to double the pay given to soldiers and policemen to discourage them from getting involved in unlawful activities, which is usually done by accepting large amounts of bribes from criminal syndicates.
Duterte said his administration will increase the budget allotted for the salaries for uniformed personnel from P60.57 billion to an amount ranging from P135.5 to P180.7 billion.
