- Mustakin was also tagged in the 2000 Sipadan Island kidnapping and the abduction of 6 members of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Sulu in 2002
The Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group announced on Tuesday, May 24, the arrest of an Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) member tasked to kidnap actress Kris Aquino, the youngest sister of President Benigno Aquino III, and the recently-retired boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.
The police identified the suspect as 44-year-old Sakur Mustakin who goes by aliases Junior Mustakim and Junior Asarani Sawadjaan.
Senior Superintendent Ronald Lee, chief of the CIDG-National Capital Region disclosed that Mustakin, who carries a P900,000 bounty on his head, was arrested by virtue of arrest warrants for kidnapping issued by the Taguig Regional Trial Court Branch 266 and Isabela, Basilan RTC Branch 1.
Mustakin, according to Lee, participated in the kidnappings in Sipadan Island in Sabah, Malaysia in 2000. He was also tagged in the in the kidnapping of six members of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Patikul, Sulu in 2002.
Mustakin and other Abu Sayyaf members were reportedly dispatched to Metro Manila early this year to sow terror and chaos during the election period by bombing malls.
They were also tasked to kidnap either Kris Aquino or Manny Pacquiao allegedly to raise funds for the terror group.
Lee said the CIDG launched Operation Plan Black Guardian after receiving information about the ASG members’ presence in Metro Manila. After conducting surveillance at the Maharlika Village in Taguig City, Mustakin was arrested on May 10.
According to Lee, Mustakin admitted his participation in the Sipadan and Sulu kidnappings when he was interrogated. However, he backtracked when he was interviewed in his detention cell by Philstar.
