- Davao City mayor’s ‘BFF’ weighs in on his controversial rape remark
- She admits it crossed the line, believes Duterte will explain himself in due time though
- She also tells those unhappy with the mayor’s words can make their sentiments felt through the ballots
MANILA, Philippines – Finally commenting on Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s controversial rape remark, Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago admitted he may have gone overboard with his statement.
On the sidelines of her sortie at Bulacan State University, Duterte’s ‘BFF’ said he “crossed the line” when he inserted his controversial remark as he was recounting the story of an Australian lay missionary who was taken hostage, raped and killed in 1989.
“I think it was over the line. I think it crossed the line,” Sun Star quoted her as saying.
At the same time, Santiago defended Duterte’s right to express himself and is confident he will come up with a proper explanation in due time.
“That’s the way he expresses himself, but I’m sure he has a proper explanation,” she said.
As for those unhappy with the Duterte remarks, Santiago said they can always express their displeasure with the mayor by not voting for him.
“If the people do not like the remark, they can express it through the ballot but otherwise he has the right to free expression,” she said.
For his part, Marcos, who was with Santiago, admitted he was also surprised by Duterte’s comment.
“Nagulat kami [We were surprised]. It seems unfortunate and I can only describe it as inappropriate. Biktima ‘yung tao ‘tapos dinagdagan pa natin [She was a victim and we added to her indignity],” he said.
Like her running mate, Marcos said he believes Duterte can explain himself and make amends to those he hurt.
“I’m sure he understands that and he will make it up to those affected,” he said.
