• Armed robbers took P6.2 million cash from an armored van on Taft Avenue
• The money was about to be loaded to a BPI ATM when the robbers struck
• BPI clarified that the armored van owned by a truck company servicing the bank was held up before it could make a delivery to the branch
Two armed robbers carted away P6.2 million cash about to be loaded to a Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) automated teller machine (ATM) early Monday morning, April 18.
The robbery took place in front of the BPI Branch in Taft Avenue corner Remedios Street in Manila at around 2 a.m., according to Police Superintendent Albert Barot of the Manila Police District.
GMA News Online stated in an article dated April 18, 2016 that the two armed men suddenly appeared as the bank personnel were about to unload the money from an armored van into the ATM.
The robbers took the bags of money and fled on a white L-300 van. The service firearm of the lone security guard was also taken by the robbers.
Supt. Barot said the robbery was done in just minutes.
The police officer urged owners of armored vans to coordinate with the local police if they are loading money to ATMs in secluded areas.
Meanwhile, the BPI management issued a statement saying the branch remains secure.
“We wish to clarify that it was a unit of the armored truck company servicing our bank and not one of our branches that was held up earlier today by criminal elements before it could make a delivery to the branch,” the statement read.
