The camp of Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay has responded to the statements made by President Benigno Simeon Aquino III during a campaign sortie of the Liberal Party (LP) in Makati City, wherein the latter said that a lot has changed with Binay since the two of them became friends during the Marcos regime.
In an article written by Yuji Vincent Gonzales for Philippine Daily Inquirer on April 9, 2016, it was disclosed that Binay’s spokesperson Joey Salgado said that the president cannot change the clamor of Makati residents to have the Binays back in the local government.
“The President unfortunately derided the services and benefits introduced by the Vice President, but apparently he was not informed that his local allies in Makati are running on a platform of continuing these same services and programs,” Salgado said.
The vice president’s representative also said that when Aquino’s allies took over the control of Makati after ex-Mayor Jejomar “Junjun” Binay was ousted, the city has already experienced “rapid deterioration.“
“In the few months that the President’s allies have run Makati, the people have experienced a rapid deterioration in the delivery of services, the return of fixers at City Hall, and local gangsterism at the barangay level. The clamor is for the return of the Binay brand of service. And not even the President’s unfortunate remarks will change that,” Salgado added.
Last week, the country’s chief executive spoke negatively about his next-in-command, who was appointed as the officer-in-charge of Makati by former President Corazon Aquino in 1986.
“Napakalinaw noong mga panahong iyon kung sino si Jejomar Binay. Ngayon, ang tanong: Saan na kaya napunta ang nakilala kong Jejomar Binay noon? [It was very clear during that time who Jejomar Binay was. Now, the question is: Where’s the Jejomar Binay that I used to know?],” Aquino said.
The vice president is currently facing a number of allegations related to graft and corruption; including the anomalous construction of Makati City Hall Building II and the overpriced birthday cakes distributed to senior citizens.
The president has also endorsed the candidacy of former Vice Mayor Romulo “Kid” Peña, who is now serving as the acting mayor of Makati City after Binay’s son, Junjun, was removed from his position by the Sandiganbayan due to graft charges.
