Famous television personality Jun Sabayton, or Rodolfo Sabayton Jr. in real life, wrote an open letter addressed to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE); expressing hopes that there will come a time when mediamen, including TV talents and freelancers, will get insured, particularly when it comes to healthcare.
[Dear DOLE, I heard that you are planning something for television, film, and new media. I hope you will include health cards, insurance in every shoot or TV show. We must be insured; especially the writers, segment producers, researchers, production assistants etc. who are just talents and freelancers in TV stations],” Sabayton wrote on Facebook.
Sabayton noted that they are the ones who go home very late at night and being subjected to holdups; the ones who cover raids and wars; and the ones who receive death treats, among others.
Also, Sabayton noted that mental health consultation must also be part of the mediamen’s benefits.
I hope mental health consultation will also be included because we are covering crimes and disasters, etc. We smile as if we are strong and unaffected but there is also a psychological effect among us],” he noted.
Meanwhile, he noted that it is love and passion that drives these mediamen to continue working even when they are being exploited.
We love our work even if we have small income because we know that what we are doing is significant to humanity],” he stated.
